Turning Movement Count

Turning movement counts (TMCs) are a critical part of traffic engineering and junction analysis. They involve recording the number of vehicles making specific turning movements at a junction. This data helps traffic engineers and planners to understand traffic flow patterns and make informed decisions about road design, signal timings, and other traffic management strategies.

This can be captured manually or by traffic monitoring cameras. These are mounted at strategic points around the junction to capture video footage of all movements. The footage is later analysed either manually or automatically, to count and classify the vehicles. The vehicles recorded are often classified to better understand the usage / behaviour of certain vehicles such as the volume of HGV's taking a particular route.

CASE STUDY

MODELLING AND CAPACITY

Our client commissioned us to conduct Turning Movement Counts at a particular location that was important to show a future development would not significantly impact the surrounding area.

There were many objections from the local community through the council's planning portal, therefore the client needed to model the junction to show that the development would not generate an unreasonable amount of traffic.
