Automatic Traffic Count

Automatic Traffic Count Surveys (ATCs) collect detailed traffic count data. Whether pneumatic or radar based solutions, they comprise elements such as vehicle classification, speed, and volume data that is clearly presented for practical use.

Undertaking work across the whole of the UK, ATC surveys are the most cost-effective solution to gather large amounts of data.

CASE STUDY

SAFETY

We were commissioned to conduct an ATC survey at a well-used trail in the South Downs National Park where the client was looking to improve the crossing facilities. The trail crosses a rural 40mph A-Road on the brow of a hill which was not only used by walkers and cyclists but also horses. The client needed to understand the quantity and composition of individuals using the crossing, as well as their behaviours, so an additional camera survey took place. Using the ATC could understand the vehicle data at the crossing point to determine the actual speeds.

The survey was conducted for 14 days and over 130,000 vehicles were recorded. However, just over 90,000  vehicles were recorded doing over the indicated speed limit.

The client used this data to help inform vehicle calming measures at the crossing to allow trail uses greater safety.
